Apple awarded key iPhone multitouch patent

Apple has been awarded a patent that appears to cover much of the iPhone’s multitouch user interface.
World of Apple (via MacRumors) spotted the patent, which was awarded last Tuesday to several Apple executives, including Steve Jobs, iPhone software chief Scott Forstall, and Wayne Westerman, one of the founders of a company called Fingerworks that Apple acquired in 2005.

Okay, I must admit the first part of the title is based on a rumor (speculation) which we had reported earlier today but the second part is based on Phil Schiller’s, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing statement to David Pogue of New York Times at Macworld 2009.

A keynote speech without mention of the iPhone Nano, and with those in the know saying…. “ummm no”, seems to have left the future of the iPhone Nano looking a little shaky.
So fast were domainers, iphone accessories websites/companies and the pirators to jump aboard many of people will be left out of pocket.
There is quite intelligent quote over on the BBC from Ian Shircore, at fraud and counterfeiting specialists Envisional.
“Our view is that it’s unlikely an iPhone Nano is in the works at Apple. You would have to radically reinvent both existing battery and radio technology. What’s more, the LCD – currently the killer feature of iPhones – would also be shrunk,” Mr Shircore told BBC News.
“If I was Apple, with the fastest selling handset in history, and I currently couldn’t make enough units to sell, why would I want to make a smaller one?”

Apple is laying claim to the navigation interface provided by the iPhone, a new patent application reveals. Published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the filing is simply titled Touch Screen Device, Method, and Graphical User Interface for Providing Maps, Directions, and Location-Based Information. Apple begins its claim by noting that as the number of functions presented by handhelds grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to build a matching interface, and multiplying the number of buttons present may be useless when dealing with applications such as Google Maps.
